Two Guangdong-Macao Joint Science and Technology Innovation Projects Awarded to IMCL

Congratulations on two Guangdong-Macao joint projects

The Intelligent Medical Computing Laboratory (IMCL, also known as GEMLab) at Macao Polytechnic University is pleased to announce that two Guangdong-Macao Science and Technology Innovation Joint Funding projects have been approved.

The joint funding programme is supported by the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province and Macao’s Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT). It supports collaborative research teams from Guangdong and Macao in addressing frontier technologies and industrial needs. With an overall approval rate of approximately 12% to 18%, the programme is highly competitive.

AI-Assisted Diagnosis for Infant Eye-Fundus Diseases

Dr. Yue Sun is participating as a co-principal investigator in the approved project titled Key Technologies Research and Clinical Application of a Large-Model-Driven Intelligent Diagnostic System for Infant Eye-Fundus Diseases. The project targets the clinical need for early screening and assisted diagnosis of eye-fundus diseases in infants and young children.

The research will investigate medical foundation models, intelligent analysis of fundus images, computer-assisted diagnosis, and clinical application. By combining medical image understanding, multimodal information analysis, and intelligent decision support, the team will explore new approaches to improve the intelligent screening and assisted diagnosis of eye-fundus diseases and support the application of AI in child eye health.

Integrated MRI and VR Assessment for Cognitive Disorders

A second project, led by Dr. Yue Liu, is titled Development of an Integrated Platform for Precise Cognitive-Disorder Diagnosis through Intelligent Detection of Cortical Abnormalities in Clinical MRI and VR Cognitive Assessment. It focuses on the early identification and precise evaluation of cognitive disorders.

The project will combine intelligent clinical MRI analysis with virtual-reality (VR) cognitive assessment. Its research will address intelligent detection of cortical structural abnormalities, digital evaluation of cognitive function, and multimodal information fusion. The team aims to develop an integrated assessment approach that brings together imaging features and cognitive-behavioural information, providing a new pathway for objective, intelligent, and precise evaluation.

Deepening Guangdong-Macao Collaboration

The two projects address different health challenges, but both are driven by real clinical needs and supported by artificial intelligence, medical image analysis, and intelligent interactive technologies. Together, they reflect IMCL’s sustained commitment to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI and healthcare.

The awards will further promote collaboration between IMCL and universities, research institutions, and clinical teams across Guangdong and Macao. The laboratory will use the projects as an opportunity to strengthen research exchange, advance the integration of computer technologies with medical needs, and contribute to innovation in smart healthcare and biomedical engineering.
